The latest earthquake, which hit near the town of Namche Bazaar, near Mount Everest, killed at least four people in the town of Chautara and destroyed several buildings, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Two people were killed in neighbouring India, according to local officials.

The Kathmandu police control room reported that more than 300 people, in and around Chautara, had also sustained injuries as a result of the tremor.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported that the quake, which struck 83 kilometres (52 miles) east of Kathmandu, had a magnitude of 7.1 before revising it to 7.4. A second 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck around half an hour later, followed by aftershocks, the USGS reported.

Tuesday’s earthquake sent people rushing out of their homes and into the streets of the capital, large parts of which were destroyed after the April 25 quake. Kathmandu’s international airport was also shut down following the quake.

Parents could be seen clutching children tightly and hundreds of people were frantically trying to call relatives on their mobile phones. Shopkeepers closed their shops and the streets were jammed with people rushing to check on their families.

“I’m heading straight home,” said Bishal Rai, a man in his 20s, who said he was trying to contact his family in the north of Kathmandu.

Shockwaves were felt across northern India and as far away as the capital New Delhi, where buildings swayed for more than a minute. Local officials in the eastern Indian state of Bihar said one man was killed when a house collapsed and another person was killed and two others injured in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

The quake’s epicentre was close to Everest Base Camp, which was evacuated after an avalanche triggered by the April 25 quake killed 18 climbers.

Mountaineers seeking to scale the world’s tallest peak have called off this year’s Everest season.

At least 8,046 people were killed and 17,800 others injured in last month’s earthquake, which left whole villages in ruins.
